An Introduction To Short Story Writing At Denman College

Learn to create the essential elements of a short story and put them together in a satisfying whole. Look at different genres, explore where to get inspiration and how to turn ideas into a workable plot. Through discussions, writing exercises and reading aloud, learn writing techniques such as flashbacks and twists and have a chance to experiment with different points of view.

This course will take place at Denman College on 16-18 March 2016.

Creative Writing For Beginners at West Dean College

This course will cover a variety of different kinds of creative writing. Are you a poet who doesn’t know it? Are you bursting with stories to tell and don’t know how to begin?

We’ll look at fiction in its many forms and also at how you can use your own life experiences in non-fiction writing. The course will start with how to get inspiration for your writing, and then look at different forms for expressing your ideas.

There will be an emphasis on enjoying the process of writing and being imaginative. Students will be encouraged to look widely for sources of inspiration and to experiment with different styles of writing.

This course will take place at West Dean College on the weekend of 30 September to 2 October 2016.

Writing Short Stories For Women’s Magazines at West Dean College

Learn how to write the short stories that women’s magazine fiction editors really want. This course will look at how you come up with great ideas for your own stories and write them in a way that will give them a head start towards publication. We’ll look at creating great characters, writing sparkling dialogue and using theme and emotion in your work.

The course will also look at how to analyse published stories, edit your work to give it maximum impact, approach submitting your work in a professional way and how to keep going when the going gets tough.

This one is at West Dean College from 19-21 February 2016.

Life Writing – Memories and Experiences

An opportunity to look at different aspects of life writing and think about how you can use your own memories and experiences as material for your writing.

This course is not currently scheduled for 2015, but if you are a residential college, or a course or festival organiser, and would like to book me to run it as either a short workshop, a one-day course or a residential please get in touch.

Festival of Romance

I’m very pleased to be speaking at the Festival of Romance again. I had a fabulous time at the event last year, so I’m thrilled to be doing it again.

The Festival is being held in Bedford this year from 16-18 November. My session is on Saturday 17th November and will be a workshop on Writing Fiction For Magazines.

This course will run in Northamptonshire and is spread across three Saturdays starting on 10 November. We will look at all aspects of creative writing with the emphasis being on practical exercises and getting started on a writing project.
